What is alcohol abuse?

It's the intentional overuse of alcohol, to the point of extreme drunkenness. It can be occasional or celebratory over-drinking, where a person drinks too much alcohol which can cause physical or mental harm, to himself and the people around. It's a serious medical and social issue today.

What alcohol does to your body?

Alcohol is poison, in the form of drug which hampers the normal functioning of body. Too much alcohol consumption creates sleeping disorders, sexual problems, internal body infections, cancers, hypertension and heart problems. It degenerates your liver functioning, leading to liver erosion(Cirrhosis), liver failure, and can eventually result in death.

Alcohol risks

Not everyone is aware of the facts on alcohol. The first and most obvious problems is the want of more alcohol, i.e alcohol abuse may lead to alcoholic addiction called alcoholism. It grows onto becoming an obsession and this endless cycle of alcoholism continues. Once the drinking habit becomes abuse, it becomes damaging. The first thing the abused loses is his concentration and capability of being sensible. He becomes scattered in his thoughts and actions.

This is one of the first alcoholism signs, where the abused has to face short-term memory loss. Loss of valuable time and lack of proper discipline in his life results in many personal and social relationship issues. This can lead to severe depression, where the person experiences extreme difficulty in handling his life properly. This can again lead to the person's destruction, in the form of losing job, spouse and his loved ones. All these can lead to more and more drinking, which can damage his brain and cost his existence.

Too much alcohol can also cause legal troubles. When an alcoholic is in abused state, he lives in a black out period, fully out of his conscious in a dreamless sleep. He can do anything in this stage, completely unaware of what he is doing. He cannot think clearly and rationally, and can eventually end up doing some kind of harmful, illegal activities. He may harm himself or physically hurt and even kill someone else, without even knowing what he is doing. He is sure to be arrested for any such criminal offences, and may have to spend his entire precious life in jail.

So, be sensible and drink aware whenever you take alcohol. If you have a problem with alcohol, do not hesitate to seek for drinking help. Treat alcoholism on time to avoid any further damage and stay away from alcohol abuse.
